Sandra Scofield
Sandra has served on juries for Texas Institute of Letters fiction awards, the Nelson Algren (Chicago) fiction awards, the Washington state arts council fellowships, and the National Endowment for the Arts Literature fellowships. She has contributed many reviews to the book pages of the Chicago Tribune, the Oregonian, and the Dallas Morning News. She has represented the National Book Foundation in visits to the Iowa Center for Books, residencies on the Spokane Reservation, and in public schools in Beaverton, Oregon. Her essay, "Writing from Love and Grief and Fear" was included in the NBF anthology, The Writing Life. She has often served on faculty for workshops at the Squaw Valley Community of Writers and the Iowa Summer Writing Festival. Sandra is a graduate of the University of Texas and the University of Oregon, and earned a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction in 1979, with particular interest in language arts scholarship. She was on the faculty of Southern Oregon State College (now Southern Oregon University). She has visited several colleges to read and work with students, including Macalaster College, the University of Arkansas, Miami University (Oxford, OH) and the University of New Mexico. During fall semester 2001, she was the Thornton Writer in Residence at Lynchburg College, Virginia. She has extensive experience as an educational planner, working with the Northwest Educational Laboratory, the Montana Department of Public Instruction, the Portland, Oregon public schools, the Alaska school districts of Tok and McGrath; and Southern Oregon State College, where she chaired the committee that developed the special education program.
